Spit tests for drunk drivers
2007-11-01 02:17:36 Shanghai Daily

SHANGHAI, Nov. 1 -- SALIVA tests will be introduced to help police battle drink-driving on city roads from February 1, 2008, according the Shanghai Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision yesterday.

The saliva tests will join breathalyzers and hospital blood tests to help police measure the alcohol level of drivers. Drink-driving is the main cause of fatal road accidents, according to police.

Drivers found driving while drunk face up to 15 days' detention and may lose their driving licenses.

In future, police officers can collect suspected drink-driver's saliva whenever they stop a driver by the roadside, testing the liquid on a special test paper.
