SHANGHAI, Nov. 2 -- UNIVERSITY students have been invited to vote for the best Chinese name for the nation's first domestically developed jet. Thousands of entries for the exercise have been received since August. But people have just two days to come up with a moniker for the ARJ-21. The winning entry will be decided by students at Fudan University and Tongji University. People from all over the country have contributed more than 110,000 different names for the jet over the past month. AVAC Public Relations & Advertising, the program organizer, have selected an expert panel to help pick the top 10 names via the program Website (www.acac-arj21.com) since October 12. The most popular names include "Bai Ling" (which means lark in Chinese), "Xiang Feng" (flying phoenix), "Zhongguo Xing" (China star), "Linghang Zhe" (pilot), "He Xie" (harmonious) and "Xiang Long" (auspicious dragon). The name "Xiang Feng" topped the list with nearly 150,000 votes, with "Shiji Xing" (century star) and "Feng Huang" (phoenix) followed to take the runner-up and third place. But the top-listed name "Xiang Feng" stirred up controversy in cyber space, as some people put notices online to point out that the name sounded similar to that of an aircraft carrier Japan used during World War II. "That is inappropriate," Netizens said. At the name voting site of Fudan University, more than 1,000 students joined the campus voting from 11:30am yesterday. "Shiji Xing" appeared to be the most commonly picked name of Fudan students, organizers said. The voting activity will move to Tongji's Siping Road campus today. All the on-site votes will be calculated into the online voting system. "The biggest purpose of holding the activity on campus is to promote our national aviation industry among the young generation, who seem to have little idea about it at present," said Cheng Guoyue, an AVIC manager. Public voting is scheduled to end on November 12, while the result won't be unveiled until the first ARJ-21 jet rolls off the production line at the end of this year.
