LOS ANGELES, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- A famous painting which is believed to be drawn by 17th century Dutch master Rembrandt was stolen in a well-planned and -executed theft in a posh hotel in marina Del Rey near Los Angeles overnight, authorities said on Sunday.
Detectives believe that the world-famous masterpiece, which is believed to be entitled "The Judgment," was stolen between 10:20 and 10:35 p.m. Saturday, while the curator of the art exhibit in the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, located about 18 miles (about 29 km) southwest of downtown Los Angeles, was distracted by a guest. "And when he turned back the Rembrandt was gone," said Steve Whitmore of the Los Angeles County sheriff's department.
The authorities have launched an investigation and a security video surveillance would help move toward solving the big theft, he added.
The pen-and-ink drawing is valued at 250,000 U.S. dollars or more, the Los Angeles Times reported on its website.
