Nepalese celebrate Mother's Day

KATHMANDU, April 21 (Xinhua) -- Nepalese people on Saturday observed Mother's Day by offering various kinds of gifts to mothers.

Sons and daughters on the New Moon Day in the Nepali month of Baisakh in April-May according to the lunar calendar take bath early in the morning and present presents to their mothers and take blessings from them.

But for those people who have lost their mothers celebrated it by going to Matatirtha in the west of capital Kathmandu to get a holy dip and offer worship.

Many people also choose to feed old women at the "old age homes " in the city.

People usually offer their mothers clothes, sweets, fruits to make them happy.

They believe that taking a holy bath in Matatirtha can help their mothers get salvation and bring prosperity to the family.

Thousands of people have flocked to Matatirtha on Saturday to take a holy dip in memory of their deceased mother.

Talking to Xinhua, a medical student named Amir Kc said that he enjoys the day every year and gives many gifts to his mother.

"I am a student now and mom says that the greatest gift for her will be seeing her son as a doctor," he said.

Maheshowri KC, after taking a holy dip, said that this is the painful day for her as she only has memories of her mother.

"I remember how I used to make her happy by offering her best sweets and foods she desired but now I offer them to other old woman of her age," she added.
