MONROVIA, July 5 (Xinhua) -- The Liberian government on Thursday expressed optimism that it is winning the fight against the deadly disease HIV/AIDS.

At the on-going Second HIV/AIDS Partners and Implementers' Conference in eastern Grand Bassa County, the Coordinator of the HIV/AIDS Program, Sonpon Blamo Sieh said 13,992 HIV/AIDS cases were recorded by health authorities between April 2010 and April 2012.

Sieh said the government has put in place several measures to ensure a drop in the rate of HIV/AIDS infections, including creating the necessary awareness across the country, and the provision of condoms to ensure safe sex.

He said about 30 HIV/AIDS testing and curative centers have been established across the country.

According to Sieh, of the 13,992 infected persons, about 10,662 are on anti-retroviral treatment.

The figure indicates that HIV/AIDS carriers in Liberia which has a population of 3.5 million, are minimal, compared to other African countries.
