Mo Yan’s brother Guan Moxin, also acting as his “spokesman” at the time when the Nobel laureate is in the spotlight, said “no” after hearing the news that Chen Guangbiao, a billionaire and controversial philanthropist, offered to award Mo Yan a house in Beijing days before.

Mo Yan’s brother said he felt amazed by the house offer, according to reporters. “Thanks for that, but Mo Yan is not ready to get something for nothing” He said.

“No free house in this world, much the way no free lunch. That must be a joke. Please don’t take it seriously, “said the elder Mo.

The proposal was also turned down by Mo Yan’s father. “My son was born and bred in a peasant farmer’s family, he only accepts what he earns.”
