The late"Genius of Soul" Ray Charles was
an eight-time winner Sunday night at the 47th annual Grammy Awards
ceremony, including winning for record of the year for"Here We Go Again"
and album of the year for"Genius Loves Company".(Photo: Yahoo) LOS ANGELES, Feb. 13(Xinhuanet)-- The late"Genius of Soul" Ray Charles was an eight-time winner Sunday night at the 47th annual Grammy Awards ceremony, including winning for record of the year for"Here We Go Again" and album of the year for"Genius Loves Company".
Charles died at June 10, 2004 of liver disease at age 73.
Other winners during the televised portion of the awards from Staples Center here included Los Lonely Boys for best pop performance by a duo or group for"Heaven", Prince for best male R&B vocal performance for"Call My Name" and Green Day, the most nominated rock act with six for their politically charged punk opera"American Idiot", won best rock album.
Additionally, Loretta Lynn won for best country album for"Van Lear Rose", U2 for best rock performance by a duo with vocals for``Vertigo'' and John Mayer for song of the year for his recording of"Daughters", while Maroon5 was named best new artist, beating out Kanye West, considered the category's favorite.
"It was very shocking," said Maroon5 frontman Adam Levine."I think everyone in the room expected him to win."
Bonnie Raitt and Billy Preston performed a tribute to Charles at the televised portion of the ceremony, while artists including U2 frontman Bono, Stevie Wonder, Norah Jones performed John Lennonand Paul McCartney's``Across the Universe,'' which was available to be downloaded online for 99 cents, with all donations and proceeds benefiting victims of the tsunami in South Asia.
Earlier Charles received six Grammy Awards for his final album"Genius Loves Company," a collection of deuts with various artistsmade during his final days.
Meanwhile, younger artists like Alicia Keys, West and Usher were among other winners during the star-stud nighttime part of the Grammy Awards, which was telecast by CBS.
Alicia Keys won four awards including best R& B album while West, mostly dominated this year, took three ones including best rap album for his"College Dropout".
US former president Bill Clinton, who won for the best spoken word album for the audio version of his autobiography"My Life" and Britney Spears, the winner for best dance recording for"Toxic" were other highlights at the awards.
