LOS ANGELES, June 26(Xinhuanet)-- The debut of"Bewitched" couldnot hex"Batman Begins," which held onto first place at the US box office for the second straight week, according preliminary figures out Sunday.

"Batman Begins" is expected to rake in 26.7 million US dollars this weekend, bringing its North American take in two weeks to 121.6 million dollars, according to Encino-based Exhibitor Relations, which tracks box office figures.

"Bewitched" based on the TV sitcom and starring Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell, opened in second place, grossing about 20.2 million dollars.

"Mr.& Mrs. Smith" came third with 16.7 million dollars, followed by the debuts of"Herbie: Fully Loaded"(12.7 million dollars), a car racing movie with Lindsay Lohan behind the wheel.

Rounding out the top five was"George A. Romero's Land of the Dead," the fourth installment of the flesh-munching zombie saga from the director of"Night of the Living Dead." It debuted with 10.2 million dollars.

For the weekend, US box office revenues for the top 12 movies totaled 116.5 million dollars, down 16 percent from the same weekend last year, when"Fahrenheit 9/11" opened as the top movie with 23.9 million dollars, according to studio estimates.

It was the 18th weekend in a row the box office declined, passing a 1985 slump of 17 weekends that had been the longest since analysts began keeping detailed figures on movie grosses. Enditem
