BEIJING, July 14 (Xinhua) --- Hollywood blockbuster "Transformers" has reaped 38 million yuan (about 5 million U.S. dollars) at the Chinese mainland box office in the first two days since its release on Wednesday night. The live action sci-fi movie about warring robots raked in 22.42 million yuan on the first day on the mainland. Many insiders predicted that with huge weekend sales, the opening week ticket sales of "Transformers" could hit 100 million yuan. Gao Jun, spokesman of Beijing's New Film Association, said "We expect the film to do more than 200 million yuan at the box office." If the prediction comes true, "Transformers" will beat "Spiderman 3" which was released on May 2 on China's mainland and has raked in more than 140 million yuan (18.4 million U.S. dollars). "Ninety percent of the audience is here to see 'Transformers'," said a staffer surnamed Wu at a Shanghai cinema. Many fans of the popular animated TV series in 1980s from which the movie was adapted now form the mainstream of today's movie-goers, Wu said. "So it's not surprising to see 'Transformers' achieve such excellent ticket sales."
