Iran launches major fiber optic connectivity project

TEHRAN, April 24 (Xinhua) -- Iran has launched an ambitiousproject to connect houses to a nationwide fiber optic networkseeking to develop internet-based businesses, Iran's Minister ofCommunication and Information Technology Mahmoud Vaezi said Monday,according to Press TV.

The project, developed by Iran Telecommunications Company, willprovide Iranian citizens with an easy access to high-speedinternet, Vaezi was quoted as saying.

The ministry has already taken major strides to promoteinternet-based businesses across Iran, he said, adding that thenational fiber optic connectivity project was a significant step inthe same direction.

Vaezi also said that Iran's data transfer capacity has increasedby 11 times since 2013 to reach as high as 10,000 gigabytes.

Iran's internet bandwidth capacity has also increased as high as10,000 gigabytes.

Vaezi said that the number of the cities, towns and areas in thecountry under the coverage of third and fourth generations ofwireless mobile telecommunications is growing rapidly. Enditem
