"Shazam!" tops North American box office in opening weekend

LOS ANGELES, April 7 (Xinhua) -- Warner Bros.' superhero film "Shazam!" took top spot of North American box office with a massive 53.45 million U.S. dollars debut through Sunday.

Based on the DC Comics character of the same name, it's the seventh installment in the DC Extended Universe. The film is directed by David F. Sandberg and stars Zachary Levi in the title role. By shouting out one word --SHAZAM!-- a streetwise 14-year-old can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam courtesy of an ancient wizard.

"Shazam!" has collected 56.77 million dollars in North America including previous sneaks, pushing its global total to 158.6 million dollars through Sunday, according to studio figures collected by measurement firm Comscore.

The film received a positive "A" rating from moviegoers on CinemaScore and a 91-percent certified fresh rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

Paramount's horror film "Pet Sematary" opened in second place with an estimated 25 million dollars. It's the second adaptation of the novel of the same name by American writer Stephen King.

Directed by Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer, the film stars Jason Clarke, Amy Seimetz, and John Lithgow. The plot follows a family which moves to a small town and discovers a mysterious graveyard in the woods behind their new home.

Disney's fantasy adventure film "Dumbo" slipped to third place in second weekend with an estimated 18.22 million dollars, pushing its North America total to 76.3 million dollars.
