Beijing's famous Silk Alley, or Xiushui Street, shuts down for good Wednesday, Jan 5, 2005.

Once a must-go place for stylish clothes and gifts in the past two decades, the famous market came to its end when a government decree ordered its close for reasons including lack of certain certificates and danger of fire.

A new Xiushui mall is almost finished right beside the old market.
