China claims Asiad women's triathlon title

DOHA, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- Wang Hongni of China claimed the women's triathlon title here Friday at the 15th Asian Games.

Wang, currently ranked No.45 in world triathlon, snatched the gold at 1:59:44.27. Her teammate Xing Lin ended forth at 2:05:36.77.

The silver medal went to Ueda Ai of Japan with 2:04:04.81. The bronze medal was taken by another Japanese player Sekine Akiko.

The 23-year Wang, who began her triathlon career a decade ago, said she was "very happy, very excited".

"I have expected a gold, and now I get it," she said. "We adopted the right tactics and won."

Wang finished the biking section with a lead of more than 5 minutes.

"As the Japanese athletes have better rankings than us, we decided to do our best to expand the lead in an early stage," she said.

Silver medal winner Ueda Ai said she felt lacking of strength in the biking section, which left her lagged far behind Wang. "Wang got a very fast start," she said.

A total of 15 athletes took part in the women's triathlon competition of the Doha Asian Games.
