Jiading Bamboo Cut is a beautiful flower in the fine arts garden of our country. Zhu He, a native of Nanxiang in Ming Dynasty, was good at painting and calligraphy, particularly seal cutting. He invented the relief and round bamboo cut technology with the deep-cutting as the basic skill. He has the following famous works, like Zhu He's Brush Pot and Long-life Buddha.
Zhu Ying, son of Zhu He was good at painting and calligraphy as well. With the knife as his pen, he was good at cutting ancient fairies and Buddha and the landscape. One of his famous works is Return Brush Pot. Zhu Zhizheng, nicknamed as Sansong had more exquisite skills and chose a wider range of subjects. His famous works are Beauty Brush Pot and Withered Lotus. After the three-Zhu period, more talents of bamboo cutting appeared continuously.
Integrating the skills of Sansong, Wu Zhifan in Kangxi Period of Qing Dynasty invented a cutting skill with the characters cut in relief and his famous works are Rolling Horse Picture and Cow Brush Pot. Three brothers (Feng Xijue, Feng Xilu and Feng Xizhang), Zhou Hao and Zhou Li are also famous bamboo cutters with their deep-cut bamboo root figures.
The first half of Qing Dynasty is the prime period of Jiading Bamboo Cutting. Jiading enjoys a reputation of Bamboo Cut Center for its comprehensive techniques and exquisite works. At the end of Qing Dynasty and the beginning of Ming Dynasty, the bamboo cut art was declining due to the wars and economic recession.
There were few bamboo cutting craftsmen and Jiading Bamboo Cut was on the verge of extinction. After the establishment of New China, bamboo cut production team and crafts companies were set up successively to cultivate the art-prentices of bamboo cut art. With the development of Shanghai rural economy, the traditional technology of woodcut is now rejuvenated again.
