HONG KONG, Sept. 13 (Xinhuanet) -- Final results of the election of Hong Kong's third term Legislative Council began to be announced by the Electoral Affairs Commission here Monday morning.
On Sunday, a total of 1.784 million electors, or 55.6 percent, from the geographical constituencies cast their votes, the commission said.
A total of 3,207,227 people from the geographical constituencies and 199,539 from the functional constituencies were registered as electors for the LegCo election.
Hong Kong's third term LegCo will be composed of 60 members, with 30 returned by functional constituencies and another 30 by geographical constituencies through direct elections.
A total of 159 candidates have been validly nominated for the LegCo election. Of which, 11 candidates have been elected unopposed in 11 functional constituencies to the Legislative Council.
The LegCo is Hong Kong's legislative body. The term of office of the third term LegCo members will begin on Oct. 1, 2004, and last for four years.
