Chelsea needs extra time to top Newcastle

BEIJING, Nov. 11(Xinhuanet)-- Chelsea needed overtime goals from Eidur Gudjohnsen and Arjen Robben to beat Newcastle 2-0 to reach the League Cup quarterfinals. In the mean time, defending champion Middlesbrough was eliminated by Liverpool.

Manchester United, playing at home, beat Crystal Palace 2-0 on goals by Louis Saha and Kieran Richardson to advance to the quarterfinals.

They will face Arsenal, who beat Everton 3-1 in its fourth-round match on Tuesday, in Manchester in the next round later this month.

In the other League Cup game Wednesday, visiting Fulham needed overtime to beat Nottingham Forest 4-2.

In the quarterfinals, Fulham will host Chelsea and Liverpool will visit Tottenham.
