LONDON, April 28(Xinhuanet)-- Former Olympic 100-meter champion Maurice Greene will take on Britain's best sprinters on their own turf at the Norwich Union International in Glasgow on June 5th, the event organisers annouced on Thursday.
Greene, arguably one of the greatest sprinters of all time, will compete for the USA over 100 meters in the three-way match against Britain and Russia at Scotstoun Stadium.
He said:"I'm really looking forward to competing in Glasgow in June, I always get a warm reception from the crowd in the UK and enjoying running there. The Norwich Union International will be a good test for me as I prepare for the World Championships in August and I'm hoping to put on a great show."
Although not quite the dominant force he once was, Greene showed that he was still one of the world's top sprinters by clocking 9.87 to take the bronze medal in a fast and extremely competitive Olympic 100-meter final in Athens last year. However he was beaten into second place on the anchor leg of the 4X100 meters relay when Mark Lewis-Francis held on to take the godl for Britain.
The American says he is confident that he can take on the Brits in Glasgow and win.
"It will be good to run against Britian's best sprinters who are very talented but still have a lot to prove in the individual event. They are Olympic gold medallists in the 4X100 meters relay but the 100 meters is the biggest chanlenge and the main goal for any sprinter."
Greene topped the world rankings at 100 meters from 1997 to 2001 winning the Olympic 100 meters title in Sydney, three consecutive world titles at100 meters and one at 200 meters. This year he is hoping to add another to the list.
He said:"2005 is an important year for me and I'm aiming to regain my 100 meters world title later this summer. I proved last year that I'm still a force to be reckoned with and I know what it takes to add a fourth 100 meters world gold medal to my collection."
The 100 meters will be one of the highlights ofa top class meeting which will include Dame Kelly Holmes' last ever appearance on the track in Scotland. The double Olympic gold medallist has made herself available for selection to the British team in 1,500 meters. Enditem
