Zhang Yining/Chen Qi become first Chinese duo out of WTTC

¡@ SHANGHAI, May 3(Xinhuanet)-- In a battle against teammates, ace Chinese woman player Zhang Yining and Olympic men's doubles champion Chen Qi suffered the first defeat for the hosts in the third round of the mixed doubles at the 48th world table tennis championships here on Tuesday.

Zhang, women's singles and doubles champion in Athens, and Chen took the control in the first three sets at 2-1 before Guo Yan/YanSen came from behind to snatch the next three sets by winning 4-2(6-11, 11-9, 7-11, 11-6, 11-8, 11-8).

In the last set, Guo who plays a trade-mark manly style with a superb physique, came from 7-5 down to a 10-8 lead as Zhang's returning ball flew out of the table.

"I felt I'm reaching my peak form and having nothing to loss onthe court. I was nervous in last two days in front of the full-house audience," said 22-year-old Guo.

Yan, two-time men's doubles world champions, said:"It was a hard game against teammates, because we are familiar with each other."

In the quarter-finals later on Tuesday, Guo/Yan meet Fukuhara Ai/Seiya Kishikawa of Japan, who had a 4-0 victory over Kim Song Chol/Kim Jong of DPR Korea.

Top seed Wang Nan/Wang Hao of China also struggled from a 4-3 win over Li Ching/Lau Sui Fei of Hong Kong, China.

Wang/Wang will play teammates Qiu Yike/Cao Zhen in the last eight, while Werner Schlager/Liu Jia of Austria face Wang Liqin/Guo Yue.

Schlager, defending champion in men's singles, was stunnd in the second round on Monday, was ousted from the men's doubles and losing to 43-year-old Spanish He Zhiwen in the singles.

After their 4-3(8-11, 6-11, 11-7, 11-13, 18-16, 12-10, 13-11) survival from Oh Sang Eun/Lee Hyang Mi of South Korea, Schlager said:"I was hampered by yesterday's defeats at first. But later I entered my fighting mood. I hope I can perform my best to save my last chance in the worlds."

Liu Guozheng/Bai Yang, runners-up in the Paris worlds two yearsago, will meet countrymen Hao Shuai/Niu Jianfeng in the last eight. Enditem
