BEIJING, June 20-- UEFA will introduce a new range of punishments to clamp down on misbehavior by fans, players and coaches in the club competitions.
European soccer's governing body decided Saturday that harsher sanctions were needed to avoid any repetition of the flare-throwing, racist chanting and criticism of referees that marred its tournaments last season.
The organization didn't specify what the punishments would be, but said it will invite leading coaches to a meeting before applying the rules by the end of the year.
UEFA chief executive Lars-Christer Olsson said an alternative was needed to the fines handed to clubs such as Inter Milan and Chelsea last season. Fines are ineffective for such high-profile teams.
UEFA also decided that Liverpool will get 10 percent of the Champions League revenue set aside to English clubs should it reach the group stage, trimming the amount allocated to the four other Premier League entrants.
