MONTREAL, July 22 (Xinhuanet) -- Having not heard the national anthem in three consecutive days, the Chinese diving finally found some relief after Guo Jingjing won the women's three-meter springboard here on Friday.
Despite of a good beginning at this year's World Aquatic Championships by bagging two golds in the first day's competition, divers of the "dream team" failed to touch any title in the subsequent three days, leaving Canada's top diver Alexandre Despatie dominating men's springboard individual events and American black horse Laura Wilkinson smiling in women's 10m platform.
However, Guo Jingjing and Wu Minxia didn't gave anybody chances. The Olympic champion Guo and the runner-up Wu in the 3m springboard in Athens just locked this gold for China with their well-balanced performances.
Finally, Guo clinched her third consecutive world champion title with a score of 645.54 points. It was Guo's fifth golds at World Championships, as she also snatched two gold medals in 3m springboard synchronized event with China's "diving queen" Fu MingXia in 2001 and 2003.
Wu Minxia and Tania Cagnotto of Italy finished second and thirdrespectively.
However, the day's event was not just so "simple". First, American diver Chelsea Davis's face hit the springboard in the preliminary. Then a field of 12 finalists had to execute their dives in heavy rain from the fourth round of final. The competition was even delayed by about 15 minutes during the last round.
With the gold snatched by Guo, China was able to top again on the medals table with three golds, three silvers and three bronzes.
Russia received their second gold in synchronized swimming, as the defending champion Anastasia Davydova and Anastasia Ermakova took victory in the duet event.
Now, Russia and the host Canada each won three golds.
The Russian squad is likely to win another synchronized swimming gold in Saturday's team event, as they have been dominating in this event since 1998.
At the same time, Chinese duo Hu Jia and Yang Jinghui are goingto guard the gold for China in men's 10m platform, as the defending champion Despatie won't keep his seat here.
