MONTREAL, July 24 (Xinhuanet) -- A haul of 12 medals including five golds grabbed by the Chinese divers at World Aquatic Championships, could not overshade the supereminence of Canada's top diver Alexandre Despatie. Meanwhile, many countries had shown their ambitions and potentials to vie in the diving circle.
Having snatched half of the diving golds in Montreal, and addedthem with four silvers as well as three bronzes, the Chinese "dream team" is still the biggest winner after haughtily bagging home six out of the eight Olympic titles in Athens.
However, Despatie is undoubtedly the most prestigious diver at the World Championships, not only for the 20-year-old is a Montreal native, but also because he successfully shaking the dominance of China.
In both men's 3m and 1m springboard, Despatie went along the winnig way of leading in all three processes, and clinched the twotitles with almost flawless performances.
In fact, the baby-faced host diver had never been regarded as aspringboard ace before his stunning victory here. If Despatie hadn't have injured his back this January, he would certainly haveconcentrated on the platform rather than divert his focus to the less thrilling springboard. After all, the platform specialist wasthe runner-up at 2001 Fukuoka World Championships and stepped ontothe top of the podium in Barcelona two years ago.
Although many experts believed that Despaite's extremely high scores were rendered by "home factor" to certain extent, Olympic champion Peng Bo and rising star He Chong in the 3m springboard, as well as 2001 world champion Wang Feng and 2003 world champion Xu Xiang in the 1m springboard, were sincerely convinced by Despaites' success.
Xu Xiang even said, "Despatie is the archrival of Chinese male divers, both in springboard and platform."
Indeed, Despatie took his victory with immense encouragement from the home spectators but also huge pressures. Defending champion Emilie Heymans of Canada just lost control in front of a fanatic crowd and missed the podium of women's 10m platform.
Besides, Chinese Olympic champion Hu Jia could not be mentionedin the same breath with Despatie because of his unstableness.
The 22-year-old nearly let his first individual platform world champion title slip off his hand with an extremely poor dive in the final with only one dive to go.
Although Hu secured his first individual platform world champion title, He would surely put himself at stake if defending champion Despatie and Australian runner-up Mathew Helm were competing with him.
Chinese star Guo Jingjing seemed the only diver to share spotlight with Despatie as she also took out two golds in Montreal. Guo also became the most decorated female diver at WorldChampionships with a collection of six golds and one silver.
Due to the absence of Dimtri Sautin and some other veterans, Russia played a rather humble role in Montreal. However, the young pair Dmitry Dobroskok and Gleb Galperin, who grabbed Russia's onlydiving gold, upstaged other world-class divers with unparalleledd synchronization and outstanding degree of difficualty.
Besides, the old-time powerhouse United States revealed its resolution of coming back to the center of the diving stage by pulling off gold, silver and bronze each. According to Laura Wilkinson, the 27-year-old champion in women's 10m platform, the United States had began to strengthen the diving squad by carryingon a national selected programme so as to call in more promising divers.
Meanwhile, Australia, Cuba, Italy, Ukraine, Germany and Britainare also posted on the medals talbe of diving in Montreal.
As a post-Olympic World Championships, Montreal welcomed a lot of fledgling or promising newbies in the ten events.
15-year-old Jia Tong and 14-year-old Yuan Peilin topped the podium of women's 10m platform synchronized, while Canadian teenage pair Roseline Filion and Meaghan Benfeito took a bronze.
