PARIS, July 28(Xinhuanet)-- Striker John Carew marked his Olympique Lyon debut with a hat-trick as they beat AJ Auxerre 4-1 in the French season's prelude, the Trophy of the Champions, on Wednesday.
Norwegian Carew, who joined the Lyon from Besiktas last month, scored twice in five minutes after the break to help Lyon lift the trophy for a fourth consecutive time.
The French champions, trying to make a record fifth consecutiveLigue 1 title this season, showed their confidence and capability with their easy victory over the French Cup winners.
Lyon's youngster Hatem Ben Arfa opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the third minute after Carew was fouled by goalkeeper Fabien Cool.
Auxerre equalized by midfielder Lionel Mathis who out manoeuvred Lyon captain Claudio Cacapa before beating Gregory Coupet from close range in the seventh minute.
Lyon took the lead again when Carew marked his debut in French soccer by slotting home just after the half-hour. Enditem
