MADRID, July 28(Xinhuanet)-- Spain's Primera Liga side Deportivo Coruna edged Newcastle United 2-1 in the first leg of an Intertoto Cup semi-final at the Riazor on Wednesday.
The English side, however, held the silver lining of turning the tie around in next week's second leg at St James' Park thanks to a thundering volley from midfielder Lee Bowyer.
In the 11th minute, Deportivo's young striker Ruben Castro steered home past keeper Shay Given to award the home side a 1-0 lead after lively winger Pedro Munitis had skipped down the right and slipped a neat pass into the area.
Having failed to find their rhythm against the Galicians, Newcaslte hit back three minutes into the second half when Bowyer smashed home with an unstoppable left-foot volley after Diego Tristan had half-cleared a corner.
Depor restored their lead 10 minutes later when Portugal centreback Jorge Andrade made the most of some half-hearted Newcastle defending to stride forward from inside his own half before calmlycurling the ball low into the corner of the net to make it 2-1.
The winner of the tie will face the winner of the semi-final between Lazio and Olympique Marseille. Enditem
