IZMIR, Turkey, Aug. 13(Xinhuanet)-- Qi Hui lifted women's 200m individual medley swimming title at the 23rd Universiade, the very second gold medal for the Chinese delegation here on Saturday.
The twenty-year-old, leading in the preliminaries, clocked 2:14.99 in the final, her second best result this year.
Trailing her rivals before taking to breaststroke, Qi overpassed her opponents in the last 100m, and led the way to secure the gold medal, edging Helen Norfolk of New Zealand into second place at 2:16.03. The bronze medal went to Nicole Hetzer of Germany at 2:17.22.
"I was in good form, but encountered a tough challenge," Qi said in smile,"I'm used to open swimming pool though I usually train indoors." The world champion(short-course) tought tomorrow's 200m breaststroke would be stiffer,"because some American girls are really good."
Team manager Tian Jianjun thought highly of Qi, attributing her win to overall strength."This is Qi's second best result this year, and she did a terrific job in her weak-point butterfly. It's beyond our expectations."
Tian mentioned that Poland and Japan have dispatched national team members to compete here."That's why they won so many medals," Tian said,"so I think we have fulfilled our aim by winning one gold medal."
Up to now, Poland had won four gold medals, two silvers and one bronze, while Japan bagged one gold, two silvers and three bronzes.
Coach Ye Jin also pinned gold-winning hopes from women's 200m breaststroke and women's 400m individual medley, which were Qi's strong points.
While talking about the Universiade, Ye said,"It's part of ourtraining plan." Enditem
