IZMIR, Turkey, Aug. 13(Xinhuanet)-- Chinese women basketballers tasted victory again Saturday by beating South Africa 85-44 yet their chance has become slim to make the top eight at the 23rd Universiade after two insulting defeats to the United States and Poland.
Encountering a weak South African team which has lost all three matches played at the University Games, the Chinese players enlarged their lead throughout to win 41 points at the end.
Wang Yingni and Zhang Zhiling respectively got 20 and 19 points to help China secure an overwhelming victory over their rivals.
However, after loosing two games, 41-86 to Poland and 54-107 to the United States, China now has a slim chance of advancement from the group. Two teams from Group B, which brackets China, Poland, South Africa, the Czech Republic and the United States, will enter the top eight. Powerhouse the United States has taken one berth and the rest four will compete for the other.
As China has lost 77 points in two games while outscoring the Czech Republic by only one point, it is hard to compete against Poland which also had two victories and was unlikely to lose so many points.
"In the group preliminary matches, our players performed well by beating the Czech Republic with a last-minute throw. However it's quite insulting that we lost so many points to Poland and the United States," said Chinese coach Liu Jin. Endtiem
