Maradona to attend football match in Chile
2006-02-27 20:26:16 Xinhua English
SANTIAGO, Feb. 27(Xinhuanet)-- Former football star Diego Maradona will watch a game between Universidad Catolica and Chile national team on Wednesday in San Carlos de Apoquindo Stadium, Chile, local media reported Monday.

Maradona wants to play an active role, which will see him on the pitch, as long as the teams allow him, said Carlos Soto, head of Chile's footballers' union Sifup.

"We have to see how interested the two teams are in seeing him on the pitch and the Universidad Catolica manager will allow him on the pitch. We hope he can stay longer," the union leader explained.

Sifup has long desired to hold a game with Maradona on the pitch, knowing that the presence of one of the world's most famous players could help boost the union's fundraising activities.

Chile is headed by Marcelo Salas and Luis Jimenez. They will battle the current champions of the Chilean league at 10 p.m. local time. Enditem
