WASHINGTON, June 5 (Xinhua) -- Michelle Wie failed to become the first woman to play in the men's U.S. Open before a balky putter ended her quest on Monday.

Wie from Hawaii, 16, stood at two under par heading into the 31st hole of the 36-hole qualifying event at Canoe Brook Country Club in Summit, N.J.

Wie opened with a 68 on the easier South course and still had achance to get one of 18 spots available to the 153-player field to the back nine. Needing at least one birdie to have a chance, her inability to master the greens finally caught up with her.

She finished at 1-over 143, five strokes short, and in a tie for 59th. Most of the shots were given away on birdie putts inside12 feet which she missed throughout the day, especially in the morning.

Wie, a student from Hawaii, will have to stick to the women's majors. She goes to Bulle Rock north of Baltimore to play in this week's LPGA Championship, where she was runner-up last year and will be among the favorites. Enditem
