Giants sack veteran manager Alou

WASHINGTON, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Felipe Alou joined the Major League unemployment line on Monday when the San Francisco Giants said they would not renew the veteran manager's contract.

"Tough decisions are always painful, and this one is especially painful," Giants general manager Brian Sabean said in a statement. "Felipe is a man of unquestioned integrity who has put his heart and soul into the Giants."

A three-times All-Star and former-Giants player, Alou returned to San Francisco as manager in 2003, replacing Dusty Baker who moved to the Chicago Cubs and was also fired on Monday.

In his first season in charge, Alou guided the Giants to the NLWest division title but they never again appeared in the playoffs.

The Giants remained in contention for a post-season spot this year but faltered down the stretch losing 11 of their final 13 games to finish third in the NL West with a 76-85 record.

In four seasons in charge, Alou compiled a record of 342-304 to rank sixth on the franchise's all-time win list.

Alou began his managerial career in 1992 with the Montreal Expos, becoming the first Dominican-born manager in Major League history.

In 13 seasons as a major league manager, Alou amassed a record of 1,033-1,021 becoming just the 53rd manager since 1900 to register 1,000 wins. Enditem
