Egypt reaps 9 golds in African region boxing championship

CAIRO, April 14 (Xinhua) -- Egypt on Saturday grabbed nine gold medals in Africa's fifth region boxing championship, the Egyptian MENA news agency reported.

During the region championship held in Cairo on April 11-14, Egypt has won nine golds in flyweight, bantamweight, featherweight, light welterweight, welterweight, middleweight, light heavyweight, heavyweight and super heavyweight, taking two bronze medals in light flyweight and lightweight classes, the report said.

As for the other three countries which took part in the championship, Uganda won a gold medal, nine silvers and two bronzes, while Ethiopia grabbed a gold medal, two silvers and four bronzes and Sudan won a silver and a bronze.

Boxers who won gold and silver from regional tournaments would qualify for the African Boxing Championship slated for May 15-22 in Madagascar, according to sports officials.
