SHANGHAI, May 17 -- THE budget for 2007 Shanghai Special Olympics World Summer Games won't exceed US$60 million, illustrating China's notion of hosting a "plain Games", the Organization Committee of the event announced this morning. "All of the events will be held in 34 renovated and repaired stadiums instead of newly built ones," said Zhou Taitong, vice-president of the Organization Committee, chief of the Executive Committee and deputy major of Shanghai. All of the rebuilding work will be finished by June. Scheduled to run from October 2 to 11, the 2007 Special Olympics marks the first time the event will be held in Asia and in a developing country. The Games will have 21 official events, four performing events and more than 10 non-sporting events. Zhou said that the majority of the staff for the Games were volunteers so the human resource won't cost too much. He said that the Special Olympics are not a commercial event, but a good for public. The Games stand for human nature. "Through the organization of the Games, we have done some marketing work. But on the whole, the funds have been collected by donation and support from all circles of society, including enterprises. The government also gave a subsidy," said Zhou. The Organization Committee had earlier estimated that the total budget would be about 400 million yuan (US$52.10) including 250 million yuan from donations and sponsorships.
