SHANGHAI, Aug. 2 -- PUTTING behind two straight losses to Slovenia and Angola, China took out its frustration on New Zealand, winning 93-63 in a one-sided contest at the Stankovic Continental Cup in Macau yesterday. It was the host's biggest victory at the six-team tournament, moving it into third place in the standings with two wins and two losses. Angola tops the table with a 3-1 record followed by the Ambassadors (also 3-1), which is a team comprising players from the National Basketball Association Development League. The Ambassadors are China's next opponent. Yi Jianlian scored a game-high 17 points as China cut loose with five players getting into double digits, including 14 points from Wang Zhizhi, who was back in the line-up after missing two games with illness. The home team seized the initiative early, Wang's two-handed slam dunk giving China a comfortable start. The second quarter was just as one-sided. China made a 15-0 run and led 32-11 at halftime. Wang Shipeng's 3-pointer gave the host the perfect beginning in the second half and even though the Kiwis tried their best to cut the gap, it was not enough. The home team led by 18 points as the third quarter ended. With victory assured, China employed its array of young hoops in the last quarter, easing to a comfortable 30-point victory. Earlier, the D-League Ambassadors beat African champion Angola, 85-72. Before the game, Angola had won three straight and it took an early lead. But the Ambassadors went on an 8-0 run and, with the Angolans struggling to find their rhythm outside the paint, they extended their lead to double digits. When the first quarter ended, the American youngsters were leading 23-9. Angola strengthened its rebound efforts in the second quarter, but the D-League maintained its supremacy, leading the first half 46-28. It was not much different over the remainder of the game as the Ambassadors eased to an easy victory, their third win at the tournament.
