CHIANG MAI, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- A rookie and a veteran won two gold medals for China in the world weightlifting championships here on Wednesday.

Rookie Yang Fan flung the pressure off his shoulder to overcome Im Yong-su of DPR Korea to take the gold medal in the men's 62kg category.

Yang's teammate Zhang Guozheng, 33, managed to make an even more impressive presence as he crushed his competition with a total lifts of 347kg in men's 69kg division, which almost equaled with his winning total of 347.5kg in Athens Olympics.

The 20-year-old Yang stole the spotlight as he combined lifts of 142kg in the snatch with 173kg in the clean and jerk to finish with 315kg.

"I thought I could lifted 320kg in the competition, so I was not satisfied with my result," Yang told the press.

Im, 28, challenged Yang at his last attempt as he lifted 173kg to finish the competition with a total of 315kg. Yang was forced to lifted the same weight to win the gold because of the body weight advantage.

With a roar from Yang before he stepped onto the stage, the new bud made a awesome display of strength and power, lifting a decisive 173kg above his head to knock down the gold medal.

Im claimed the silver and Ivaylo Filev of Bulgaria the bronze on 301kg.

Zhang Guozheng produced a riveting display of lifting as he won his fist gold medal in three years.

Zhang, Olympic champion combined lifts of 155kg in the snatch with 192kg in the clean and jerk to finish with 347kg.

"I lost 7kg (to match up with the competing regulation) since I arrived here. I think I did a good job today," Zhang said.

"I believe I still have room to improve my performance and I can achieve my best result in the Olympics in Bejing. I am quite confident," added him.

Zhang had been absent from the worlds since he took the gold medal in the Olympics in Athens.

His compatriot Shi Zhiyong, 27, settled with silver at 338kg and Demir Demirev of Bulgaria, bronze medalist in last year's worlds, lifted a total of 334kg to take the bronze.

Another lifter of China, Qiu Le, quit worlds after his elbow was disjointed during the snatch event in men's 62kg category.

Qiu, world champion in 2005 and 2006, was sent to the local hospital and a ligament strain in his right elbow had been confirmed.
