China's gold medal haul swells to four at Asian championships

YANGZHOU, China, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- China's gold medal haul at the Asian table tennis championships swelled to four here Saturday with fresh wins in the women's and men's doubles.

Both finals were all-Chinese affairs, with China undoubtedly capturing the two titles after dominating both the men's team and women's team events in the first three days of the championships.

But world No. 2 Guo Yue and No. 5 Li Xiaoxia made an upset by defeating top-ranked Zhang Yining and third-ranked Wang Nan, the women's doubles gold medalists at Athens.

The Guo-Li pair won 9-11, 11-6, 11-9, 12-10, 11-8.

Tie Ya Na and Zhang Rui of Hong Kong and Singapore's Sun Beibei and Yu Mengyu finished joint third.

Later, sixth-ranked Ma Long and 10th-ranked Hao Shuai rallied from two sets down to eliminate second-ranked Wang Hao and eighth-ranked Chen Qi in an evenly matched battle 7-11, 4-11, 11-5,11-7, 11-6, 8-11, 11-7.

In the quarterfinals, Ma and Hao had upset Li Ching and Ko LaiChak from Hong Kong of China, the defending champion and Olympic men's doubles silver medalists at Athens.

Japan's Jun Mizutani and Seiya Kishikawa shared the bronze medals with Chinese Taipei's Chuang Chih-Yuan and Wu Chih-Chi.

Earlier in the day, the South Korean pair of Oh Sang Eun and Kwak Bang Bang claimed the mixed doubles title after beating Ko and Tie 11-9, 7-11, 11-5, 6-11, 11-4, 11-8.

The runner-ups are the DPR Korea's Kim Hyok Bong and Kim Jong and South Korea's Choi Hyun Jin and Shim Sqe Rom.
