Liu Haixia breaks world record to win gold in weightlifting worlds

CHIANG MAI, Thailand, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- Liu Haixia of China broke the world record to win the gold medal in the women's 63kg category in the world weightlifting championships here on Sunday.

Liu, gold medalist in the women's 58kg class in 2006, hoisted 142kg in the jerk to lift a world-record total of 257kg, crashing the previous one by 1kg.

The previous world record of the total was set by Pawina Thongsuk of Thailand in the Doha worlds in 2005.

Svetlana Tsarukaeva of Russia claimed the silver by 250kg and Pak Hyon-suk of DPR Korea took the bronze on 240kg.
