Wushu to appear at Beijing Olympics
2007-09-27 02:31:21 Shanghai Daily

SHANGHAI, Sept. 27 -- WU shu, a traditional Chinese martial art, will appear as a special event at the Beijing Olympics next year but medals will not be included in the medal tally for the Games, the Liaoshen Evening News reported today.

Wu shu is expected to offer 10 gold medals for participants, the northeastern-based newspaper said, citing a senior Chinese martial arts official.

But as the sport is not in formal competition at the Olympics, and is not an official demonstration sport, the design of the gold medals will be different from medals for other sports, said Wang Xiaolin, director of the national governing body of martial arts.

Wushu is now in the running for possible inclusion along with golf, rugby, squash, karate and rollerblading at the 2012 Olympics.
