World champion Gay loses to Spearmon in 100m final at Shanghai

SHANGHAI, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- American Wallace Spearmon beat world champion Tyson Gay to win the men's 100m title at the Shanghai Golden Grand Prix here on Friday.

Spearmon clocked 9.96 seconds, 0.06 seconds ahead of his teammate Gay, to win the gold.

The newly-crowned 100m and 200m world champion led most of the time during the race but was surpassed just five meters to the end.

Jamaican Michael Frater took bronze with 10.07 seconds.

Chinese athletes Zhang Peimeng and Wen Yongyi finished 7th and 8th respectively.
