SHANGHAI, China, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- Two-time World Cup champions United States led one-time champion Norway 1-0 at the halftime of their third-place playoff at the fifth edition of the women's World Cup here on Sunday. In the tight duel, American striker Abby Wambach broke the deadlock in the 30th minute when she deflected home a powerful long shot made by midfielder Lori Chalupny. Norwegian forward Melissa WIIK found the best scoring chance in the 20th minute when she burst into an open area in the box but her diving header on a right-wing cross went wide. Both teams suffered heavy losses in the semifinals. The Americans were humiliated by Brazil 4-0, ending their 51-game unbeaten run in the world arena. The Norwegians were trounced by Germany 3-0, although they even dominated the first 35 minutes. In the previous four World Cup finals, the United States were crowned in 1991 and 1999 while Norway went atop in 1995. The United States were the only team to reach the top three at every World Cup.
