Yao ends disappointing summer with China

BEIJING, Oct 1, 2007 (AFP) - Giant Houston Rocket centre Yao Ming wrapped up a disappointing summer of training with China's national team Monday, scoring 27 points in an 83-77 loss to European powerhouse CSKA Moscow.

Yao has played eight games with the national team in the last three weeks, winning six, but losing to the Moscow side and the Brisbane Tigers from the Australian basketball league.

"Simply speaking, you can say that our chemistry is far from good enough, but we haven't even played 10 games together and we have a lot of set plays that we need to work on," Yao told the Titan Sports Weekly.

"I can only say that it is regrettable, this summer the game schedule and our luck were not so good."

Yao has complained that national team plays too many games in far-off places that focus too much on commercial interests at the expense of preparing for next year's Beijing Olympics.

During a gruelling summer, the Chinese side chalked up 12 wins and 20 losses, getting soundly beaten in tours of Europe and the United States that did not include Yao, the top scorer.

Yao's absence has also hurt the team's sponsors as few people turned out to watch matches that he did not play in.

Yao will return to the Rockets' training camp on Wednesday after attending the opening of the Special Olympics in Shanghai on October 2, where he is an ambassador for the Games.

"The next month of training camp... is certainly going to be difficult for me," Yao said of the NBA training camp.

"If I had started systematic training at the beginning of August, I would have a lot of confidence that my strength and speed had returned to form, but right now it is hard to say."
