OTTAWA, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- French figure skater Brian Joubert won the men's gold medal at the Skate Canada Grand Prix on Sunday.

Belgian Kevin Van Der Perren, whose best showing at a world championship was eighth in 2005, secured the silver at the race held in Quebec City. Canadian champion Jeff Buttle got bronze.

But neither of the three performed well enough at the show, which was full of defaults. Joubert tumbled to the ice on his quad at the start and deleted a planned second quad. The mistakes continued. He got in only five clean triple jumps.

"I'm disappointed with the quad," said the 23-year-old Frenchman. "I was nervous and thinking too much about what I had to do."

Buttle, third in both the short and the long, had indicated he would try a quad Sunday, but he got in only a double. He popped out of a triple flip, got credit for a double on a planned triple Axel, and he fell on a triple Lutz.

Earlier Sunday, the ice dance title was won by Canadians Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, who had led after the opening compulsory dance and again after the original dance.

They gave a polished performance to "Umbrellas of Cherbourg" and won the title with a total score of 197.07.

Italians Anna Cappellina and Luca Lanotte were second with 171.57 and France's Pernelle Carron and Mathieu Jost were third with 167.83.

The competition was marred by a warm-up accident when American Denis Petukhof lost his grasp of his partner and wife Melissa Gregory while they attempted a rotation lift.

Gregory crashed to the ice on her chest and lay motionless for several minutes before medical personnel removed her on a stretcher.

Doctors said later in a statement that Gregory's vital signs were stable and that she was alert and undergoing further tests.

Skate Canada, the second of the six International Skating Union (ISU) Grand Prix events, started Friday in Quebec City with a field of 12 ladies and men, 10 dance couples and eight pairs.

On Saturday, Japan's Mao Asada and Germany's Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy won the women's and pairs' title respectively.
