BRASILIA, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- A section of the seating in FonteNova stadium collapsed and killed eight people on Sunday, while fans of the soccer club of Bahia celebrated the victory of their home team. The section of seats that collapsed fell an estimated five stories. Three women and three men died instantly. Two others were seriously injured and taken to a near-by hospital. However, they did not survive their injuries. The fans fell through an already existent hole in the stands. Four others remain in intensive care at the State General Hospitalin serious condition. According to the military police of Bahia, the victims of the accident were taken to the morgue to be identified. The collapse took place near the exit of the stadium, underneath the banners that marked the accomplishment of the team of being raised into the second league of Brazilian national soccer. The home team tied Vila Nova by a score of 0-0. After the final whistle blew, the field was invaded by fans celebrating the achievement. The accident put a damper on the celebration. Although a celebration was planned to commemorate the team's ascension into the "Serie B" outside of the stadium, the organizers decided to postpone the party in light of the unfortunate accident.
