ROME, March 14 (Xinhua) -- Lindsey Vonn won her first overall World Cup title in Bormio, Italy, on Friday after taking an unassailable lead following the final slalom of the season.

American Vonn has joined compatriot Bode Miller as overall champion, the first time the United States has won both the men's and women's titles since 1983, the Reuters said.

Vonn, formerly known as Lindsey Kildow, had already scooped the downhill title. The 23-year-old's overall triumph is the first by an American women since Tamara McKinney in 1983, when Phil Mahre also won for the U.S. in the men's competition.

Miller wrapped up his second overall World Cup on Thursday after Swiss Didier Cuche, the only man who could catch him, opted not to race in Saturday's final slalom.
