SHAOXING, East China, April 4 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese quartet rewrote the national record of men's 4X100 meters medley relay in three minutes 37.92 seconds at the Olympic trials events here on Friday.
"We've been planning to do this. The European swimmers are edging us out. We are feeling a lot of pressure and really need to catch on," said Chen Zuo, the last leg freestyler.
The four swimmers, Ouyang Kunpeng, Xie Zhi, Zhou Jiawei and Chen Zuo, are the top picks in the four strokes and also national records holders.
"This is not the best result. As far as I know, it could only place us the 16th in the world," Chen added.
The previous national record for the event was 3:39.29, and the world record is kept by the American team at 3:30.68.
The new record is the sixth at the trials, which have already saw five new Asian or national records in men's 100 meters breaststroke, 200 meters butterfly, 400 meters freestyle and 4X100 meters freestyle relay, and women's 100 meters backstroke.
