RIO DE JANEIRO, April 9 (Xinhua) -- Botafogo beat River 2-0 in the Brazil Cup soccer tournament here on Wednesday evening.
Playing at the Joao Havelange Olympic Stadium, Botafogo was threatened with a possibility of elimination, as it had been defeated 2-1 by River in their first match on April 2, in Piaui state, northeastern Brazil.
But the traditional club dominated the rematch on Wednesday. Defender Andre Luis opened the score in the 22nd minute and forward Wellington Paulista sealed the victory in the 47th.
