BRUSSELS, April 16 (Xinhua) -- Ajax won the crucial match against hosts Groningen 2-1 on Wednesday night to keep alive its hopes of clinching the Dutch premier league title in the last match of the season four days later.
Playing at Euroborg stadium in Groningen, Ajax, ranked second after defending champions PSV Eindhoven with six points adrift, was determined to tear apart its opponents.
At the 19th minute, Swedish midfielder Rasmus Lindgren's header put Ajax in front, but at the last minute of the first half, Argentine defender Matias Cahais equalized for the hosts.
At the 66th minute, Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez scored from close range in the box zone to give Ajax the much-needed victory.
The victory cut Ajax'deficit with PSV to three points. If PSV were upset by Vitesse next Sunday, Ajax could land the title with a home victory over lowly-rated Heracles thanks to a better goal difference.
Nevertheless, PSV has a much easier task as it only needs a draw against Vitesse on Sunday to retain the title.
