DAR ES SALAAM, May 4 (Xinhua) -- Tanzania's Taifa Stars have beaten Uganda's Cranes 2-0 in their first-leg qualifier for the Championship of African Nations soccer tournament.
Emmanuel Gabriel and Shaaban Nditi each scored a goal for the Tanzanian eleven who hosted the match in Mwanza of northwestern Tanzania on Saturday.
The Taifa Stars are scheduled to travel to Uganda to play their second-leg qualifier between May 16-18.
Tanzania now need a draw or a defeat with less than two goals to qualify for the final qualifier with either Rwanda or Sudan.
Tanzania beat Kenya 2-1 while Uganda downed Eritrea 5-2, both on aggregate, to set up their second-round match.
The newly-launched Championship of African Nations is designed for home-based soccer players. Africa already has an African Cup of Nations for national sides with both home- and foreign-based players.
The grand finale of the inaugural Championship of African Nations will be played early next year in Cote d'Ivoire.
