BRUSSELS, May 20 (Xinhua) -- The Dutch club Ajax and veteran star midfielder Edgar Davids have decided to part ways as Davids will not extend his contract with the club, which expires on June 30 this year, according to the club's website on Tuesday.
Davids first left Ajax in May 1996, and went on to play for AC Milan, Juventus, Barcelona, Internazionale and Tottenham Hotspur. He returned to the Amsterdam club on Jan. 30, 2007.
The 34-year-old midfielder played 184 official matches for Ajax, scoring 36 goals. With Ajax, he won three national titles, two Dutch Cups, four Dutch Super Cups, an European Super Cup, the UEFA Cup, the Champions League and the World Cup for clubs.
Davids' decision to leave Ajax came after Ajax failed to qualify for next season's European Champions League, losing to Twente in a Dutch playoff last Sunday.
"I am sorry that we part ways, because I am an Amsterdammer anda real Ajax man. But I cannot stay with Ajax at all cost. I have said in the past weeks that the chance was small that I would stay," said Davids.
Davids said he did not have his future career plans yet. "At this moment, I don't know what I will do. There has been plenty of interest. I am fit and feel good enough to keep playing on a high level."
