Soccer player Silva dies in hospital days after assassination attempt

RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- Thiago Jotta da Silva, 25-year-old professional soccer player, died on Wednesday in Rio de Janeiro after being shot last Thursday.

On Sunday, Silva's ex-girlfriend, Alyne Padula Viana, and her aunt, Marcia Padula Viana, were taken by the police for the attempted homicide. The women were accused of hiring an assassin to kill Silva.

Silva played for the farm team of Vasco, the second division team Estacio de Sa Soccer Club.
