BELGRADE, July 4 (Xinhua) -- Diving competition will get underway on Saturday at the World University Games with a host of Olympic medalists ready to take center stage at the Kosutnjak swimming pool.
The favorites are, as usual, Chinese who have been a perennial powerhouse in this sport.
The competition will be tough among the women. Athens Olympic champion Lao Lishi has high hopes of winning the platform events, though she is expected to face challenge from Mexican girl Paola
Espinosa, who had the honor of carrying the national flag at the opening ceremony of Olympic Games in Beijing where she got the bronze medal.
Peng Bo, the gold medalist at the Athens Olympics in 2004, will lead China's assault in the men's action. His main opponent is Oleksiy Prygorov from Ukraine, the bronze medalist in Beijing 2008.
A total of 12 gold medals are on offer in diving at the Belgrade Universiade.
