German Steffen wins 50 free in world record

ROME, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- Germany's Britta Steffen won the 50m freestyle gold in a world record time of 23.73 seconds at the world swimming championships here on Sunday.

Steffen broke the previous record of 23.96 set by Marleen Veldhuis of the Netherlands in Amsterdam on April 19.

Sweden's Therese Alshammar came second in 23.88 and Australia's Cate Campbell and Veldhuis finished joint third in 23.99.
