DPRK strongman sets new EAG records for 62-kg men's weightlifting title

HONG KONG, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- Kim Un-guk, an athlete representing the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) in the men's 62-kg category of weightlifting, on Monday won the first gold medal for his country at the 5th East Asian Games (EAG) and set the new games records for the clean and jerk as well as the total.

Kim, 21, lifted 140kg in snatch and 170 in clean and jerk to score a combined total of 310kg.

The previous EAG clean and jerk record for the category was 169kg, set by Chinese Taipei athlete Wang Shin-yuan in 2005, and the previous record for the combined weight of 304kg was held by Chinese athlete Zhang Xiangxiang. The snatch record was 140kg, setby Chinese athlete Wu Jian in 2001.

Yang Sheng-hsiung of Chinese Taipei finished with a silver medal at the EAG competition on Monday by hoisting 132kg in snatch and 164kg in clean and jerk, respectively.

Cha Kum-chol, also from the DPRK, won the bronze medal with a combined weight of 293kg.
